Cancel For Your Reason (CFYR) Travel Insurance for New Zealand Travellers
Available with Go Ultra, Cancel For Your Reason (CFYR) is an optional travel insurance upgrade from Go Insurance New Zealand that gives you added flexibility if your plans change for personal reasons not covered under standard cancellation benefits.
Add CFYR to a Go Ultra policy when you buy your NZ travel insurance at goinsurance.co.nz. It must be selected at time of purchase and shown on your Certificate of Insurance, and cover is subject to the Policy Wording limits, conditions and exclusions.
How CFYR Works
Cancel Your Trip for Your Own Reasons
Sometimes plans change for reasons no policy can predict. Cancel For Your Reason gives you the option to cancel your trip for your own personal reasons, even when those reasons are not covered under the standard cancellation section of your policy.
It gives New Zealand travellers more flexibility when committing to bookings in advance, while still keeping the protection of a Go Ultra travel insurance policy. CFYR is designed for cancellation reasons not covered under standard policy benefits, and it applies only when your trip could still go ahead but you decide not to travel.
Cancel For Your Reason in Brief
How to Add Cancel For Your Reason
Adding CFYR to a Go Ultra policy is straightforward, but there are a few timing rules to be aware of. Follow these steps during the quote process at goinsurance.co.nz/quote/.
Buy Early
Purchase Go Ultra with CFYR within 3 days of your first trip payment, such as a deposit. Any costs paid more than 3 days before purchase will not be covered under CFYR.
Insure Your Full Trip
Select a cancellation amount that reflects your full anticipated trip cost, not just the non-refundable parts. If your cover is lower than your total trip cost, some expenses may not be included in a claim.
Add It at Purchase
CFYR must be selected when the policy is first purchased and cannot be added later. Your trip must depart at least 7 days after you buy your policy.
Cancel in Time
To claim, you must cancel at least 48 hours before departure and seek refunds from your travel providers first. Claims are always assessed under standard cancellation benefits before CFYR.
How Much CFYR Reimburses
If you cancel your trip for a reason not covered under standard policy benefits, CFYR can reimburse up to 75% of your non-refundable trip costs, up to a maximum of $50,000 per policy.
This applies after any refunds you receive from your travel providers have been taken into account. Because CFYR covers up to 75% of non-refundable costs, you will always have at least 25% out of pocket.
A Simple Illustration
Say you cancel a $5,000 holiday and receive a $1,000 refund from your travel provider.
This example is for illustration only. Actual amounts depend on your trip costs, refunds received and the limits in the Policy Wording.

Cancel For Your Reason, Frequently Asked Questions
Everything New Zealand travellers commonly ask about CFYR and Go Ultra with Go Insurance.
Is CFYR only available with Go Ultra?
Yes. Cancel For Your Reason can only be selected when you purchase a Go Ultra policy from Go Insurance New Zealand. It is an optional upgrade and is not available on Go Basic, Go Plus or Go Elite.
When do I need to buy CFYR?
You must purchase CFYR within 3 days of making your first trip payment, such as a deposit. Any trip costs paid more than 3 days before purchase will not be covered under CFYR.
Does my trip need to be a certain number of days away?
Yes. Your departure must be at least 7 days away at the time you purchase CFYR. If your trip departs in less than 7 days, CFYR is not available.
How much can CFYR reimburse?
CFYR can reimburse up to 75% of your non-refundable trip costs, up to a maximum of $50,000 per policy. This applies after any refunds from your travel providers are taken into account, so you will always have at least 25% out of pocket.
When does CFYR apply, and when does it not?
CFYR applies when your trip can still go ahead but you choose not to travel for your own personal reasons. It does not apply if your trip cannot proceed due to border closures, government action, travel bans or travel provider failure.
Can I claim under both standard cancellation and CFYR?
No. Claims are always assessed under the standard cancellation benefits first, as that may provide a higher benefit, and you cannot claim under both standard cancellation and CFYR for the same reason.
Can I add more bookings after I buy CFYR?
Yes. If you book additional travel arrangements after purchasing, contact Go Insurance New Zealand within 48 hours to add their value so your cover stays adequate. An additional premium may apply, and cover remains subject to your selected cancellation amount and the Policy Wording.
How do I make a CFYR claim?
Cancel your trip at least 48 hours before departure, request refunds from your travel providers, then contact our team through the claims support page. Claims are assessed under standard cancellation benefits first, with CFYR considered where the reason is not otherwise covered.
