How Travel Insurance Works
Travel insurance is designed to help protect New Zealand residents against selected unexpected events while travelling overseas. Here’s how Go Insurance works, from getting a quote to making a claim.
Before you buy
How it works in four simple steps
Travel insurance does not need to feel complicated. Start with your trip details, tailor the cover to your plans, then keep your documents handy while you travel.
Get a quote
Enter your destination, travel dates and traveller details to see available cover options for your trip.
Tailor your cover
Choose your cover level and add any optional covers that are relevant to your travel plans.
Purchase your policy
Once purchased, you will receive your Certificate of Insurance and access to the relevant Policy Wording.
Travel with support
If something unexpected happens while you are away, emergency assistance and claims support may be available.
What travel insurance may help with
Travel insurance is designed for selected unexpected events that may affect your trip.
Optional covers
Some trips need more than standard cover. Depending on the product and your travel plans, optional covers may be available for selected activities, cruise travel, snow sports, business travel, golf, water sports or other specialist travel needs.
Optional covers only apply where they are selected, accepted and shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Always check the Policy Wording for the terms, limits and exclusions that apply.
Understanding your Policy Wording
The Policy Wording explains what is covered, what is not covered, the benefits and limits that apply, your obligations, exclusions and how claims are assessed. It should be read before purchasing so you can decide whether the cover is right for your trip.
Your Certificate of Insurance confirms the details of your policy, including the travellers, travel dates, destinations, selected cover and any optional covers or endorsements that apply.
Pre-existing medical conditions
Medical history matters when buying travel insurance.
Some pre-existing medical conditions may be automatically covered if eligibility criteria are met. Others may need to be declared and assessed before cover can be offered.
If you are unsure whether a medical condition needs to be declared, it is best to check before purchasing.
Activities and travel plans
Many common sport and leisure activities may be covered on an amateur or recreational basis, but higher-risk activities, professional participation or specialist travel plans may need optional cover or assessment.
Check the Policy Wording carefully before you travel, especially if your trip includes skiing, cruising, adventure activities, water sports, business equipment or unusual destinations.
Making a claim
If something happens while you are away, keep records and contact us as soon as practical.
Emergency assistance
If you are overseas and need urgent medical, hospital or emergency travel assistance, contact emergency assistance as soon as possible.
Emergency assistance is different from making a claim. It is designed to provide immediate support during an emergency while claims are assessed separately under the Policy Wording.
Before you travel
A few simple checks can make travelling with insurance much easier.
