Sailing travel insurance for New Zealand sailors, crew and regatta competitors

Planning to sail, crew, charter a yacht or compete in a regatta overseas? Go Insurance offers Sailing cover designed for New Zealand travellers participating in a wide range of sailing and boating activities — from leisurely coastal cruising to competitive ocean racing.

Sailing cover is an optional extension that can be added to your Go Insurance travel insurance policy. With up to $5,000,000 in personal liability cover, it is one of the most comprehensive sailing travel insurance options available to New Zealanders.

Important before you apply

Sailing cover is not automatically included with your travel insurance policy.

Sailing cover is an optional extension that must be applied for separately.
Different sailing activities require different application forms — choose the right one for your trip.
If approved, cover must be shown on your Certificate of Insurance.
This cover must be read in conjunction with your Go Insurance Policy Wording.
Terms, limits, conditions and exclusions apply.

Standard travel insurance may not cover your sailing activities

Standard travel insurance is generally designed for ordinary travel activities. Sailing, boating, crewing and competitive racing involve different risks — open water, vessel operations, weather exposure and navigation — that may not be covered under a standard policy.

Go Insurance’s Sailing cover is designed to provide selected protection for eligible New Zealand travellers participating in a wide range of sailing activities overseas, from leisure boating to competitive regattas.

Cover Benefits

What Sailing cover includes

If approved, Sailing cover provides the following benefits. All amounts are in NZD and subject to the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the cover document and Policy Wording.

$5,000,000

Personal liability

Cover for all costs you are legally liable to pay for bodily injury to third parties or damage to their property arising from an accident during your trip, including legal costs. This is one of the most significant protections for any sailor operating overseas.

$5,000

Sailing equipment

Cover for loss, theft or breakage of your sailing equipment during the trip. Includes up to $750 per item, pair or set. Also covers hired equipment that is lost, stolen or broken while in your custody and control.

$5,000

Yacht charter excess waiver

If you are legally liable for damage to a chartered vessel, cover is available for the excess on the chartered vessel’s insurance policy. No excess applies to this benefit.

$2,500

Replacement crew member

If you are unable to participate in your pre-booked sailing activity due to death, bodily injury, illness or permanent total disablement, cover is available for the reasonable additional accommodation and travel costs to send a substitute crew member in your place.

$500

Sailing equipment hire

If your sailing equipment is lost, stolen or delayed in transit for 12 hours or more while en route to your sailing destination, cover is available for the cost of hiring emergency replacement equipment. No excess applies to this benefit.

On request

Racing and offshore sailing

Cover for non-professional competitive racing and sailing in non-territorial waters is available on request and subject to assessment. Both must be declared to and accepted by Go Insurance prior to cover being granted and will be noted on your Certificate of Insurance if approved.

How to apply

Choose the right application form for your sailing activity

Sailing activities are not all the same. Different activities require different application forms. Please select the form that best matches what you will be doing overseas.

Option 1

Sailing with a Licensed Commercial Operator (LCO) — participating in operational tasks

Choose this form if you are sailing or boating with a licensed commercial operator and will be participating in operational tasks on board.

Option 2

Sailing without a Licensed Commercial Operator — hired vessel, privately owned vessel or crew member

Choose this form if you are in charge of a hired or privately owned leisure vessel, or if you are a crew member sailing without a licensed commercial operator.

Option 3

Regatta participation

Choose this form if you are participating in an organised regatta overseas. Regatta cover is subject to underwriting assessment and must be declared and accepted prior to your departure.

FAQs

Sailing Insurance FAQs

These answers are general in nature. Please read the Cover Document and your Go Insurance Policy Wording for full details of cover, limits, conditions and exclusions.

Is Sailing cover automatically included with my travel insurance?

No. Sailing cover is an optional extension that must be applied for separately. It must be shown on your Certificate of Insurance before it applies. If it is not on your Certificate of Insurance, Sailing cover has not been added to your policy.

Which application form should I use?

There are three forms depending on your activity. Use the LCO form if you are sailing with a licensed commercial operator and participating in operational tasks. Use the non-LCO form if you are in charge of a hired or privately owned vessel or are a crew member without an LCO. Use the regatta form if you are competing in an organised sailing event. If you are unsure, contact our team before applying.

What is a Licensed Commercial Operator (LCO)?

A Licensed Commercial Operator is a licensed commercial sailing or boating operator responsible for operating the vessel. Whether an LCO is involved determines which application form you should use.

How much personal liability cover is included?

Up to $5,000,000 for costs you are legally liable to pay for bodily injury to third parties or damage to their property arising from an accident during your trip. This includes legal costs. Note that liability arising from mechanically propelled or motor driven boats is excluded.

Is my sailing equipment covered?

Yes. Up to $5,000 for loss, theft or breakage of your sailing equipment during the trip, with a maximum of $750 per item, pair or set. Hired equipment that is lost, stolen or broken while in your custody and control is also covered. Note that equipment lost overboard or damaged while in use is excluded.

What happens if my equipment is delayed getting to my destination?

If your sailing equipment is delayed in transit for 12 hours or more while en route to your sailing destination, up to $500 is available to hire emergency replacement equipment. No excess applies to this benefit.

What if I cannot make my sailing trip due to illness or injury?

Up to $2,500 is available for the reasonable additional accommodation and travel costs to send a substitute crew member in your place if you are unable to participate due to death, bodily injury, illness or permanent total disablement.

What if I damage a chartered yacht?

Up to $5,000 is available to cover the excess you are legally liable to pay on the chartered vessel’s insurance policy if the yacht sustains loss, theft or damage. No excess applies to this benefit. Note that damage arising from operating the vessel in violation of the charter agreement is excluded.

Is competitive racing covered?

Cover for non-professional competitive racing is available on request and subject to assessment. It must be declared to and accepted by Go Insurance prior to your departure and will be noted on your Certificate of Insurance if approved.

Can I sail in international or offshore waters?

Cover for sailing in non-territorial waters is available on request and subject to assessment. It must be declared to and accepted by Go Insurance prior to cover being granted. Note that sailing in high threat waters as listed by the LMA Joint War Committee is excluded unless specifically agreed in advance.

Does this cover need to be read alongside the Policy Wording?

Yes. Sailing cover is an extension to your Go Insurance travel insurance policy and must be read in conjunction with your Policy Wording, which contains the standard terms, conditions, exclusions and definitions that also apply.
